It should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which describes more fully how we handle personal data.

1. WHAT COOKIES ARE

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They allow a site to function, to remember your choices between pages and visits, and to give the site operator information about how the site is used. We also use closely related technologies, including web beacons, pixels, local storage, and software development kits, and where this policy says "cookies" it means all of them.

Cookies are described in two ways. By origin, a cookie is either first-party, set by the site you are visiting, or third-party, set by another provider whose service the site uses. By duration, a cookie is either a session cookie, which is deleted when you close your browser, or a persistent cookie, which remains for a defined period or until you delete it.

2. THE CATEGORIES WE USE

  • Essential. Required for the Website to operate securely. These are always active.

  • Analytics. Help us understand how the Website is used so we can improve it. Set only with your consent.

  • Functional. Remember your preferences and enable enhanced features. Set only with your consent.

We do not use advertising or marketing cookies. We do not sell personal data, we do not share personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use cookies for targeted advertising or to build advertising profiles.

3. ESSENTIAL COOKIES

Essential cookies enable core functions such as security, network management, page rendering, and member authentication. The Website cannot operate properly without them, and they cannot be declined through the consent banner. They do not require consent under applicable law.

The Website is hosted on the Wix platform, which sets the following essential cookies:

  • XSRF-TOKEN. Security. Prevents cross-site request forgery. Duration: session.

  • hs. Security. Maintains visitor security settings. Duration: session.

  • svSession. Security. Identifies unique visitors and tracks sessions. Duration: 2 years.

  • SSR-caching. Performance. Records how the site was rendered. Duration: 1 minute.

  • smSession. Authentication. Identifies logged-in site members. Duration: session.

  • TS cookies. Security. Anti-fraud and traffic protection. Duration: session.

  • bSession. Performance. Measures system effectiveness. Duration: 30 minutes.

  • fedops.logger.sessionId. Performance. Stability and error monitoring. Duration: session.

Cookie names and durations are set by the platform provider and may change without notice to us. We review this table at least annually.

4. ANALYTICS COOKIES

Analytics cookies help us understand which pages are read, how visitors arrive, and where the Website is failing them. We use this to decide what to publish and what to fix. Analytics cookies are not set unless you consent.

We use Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google LLC.

  • _ga. Distinguishes unique users by a randomly generated client identifier. Duration: up to 2 years.

  • _ga_<container-id>. Persists session state across page views. Duration: up to 2 years.

  • _gid. Distinguishes users for short-term measurement. Duration: 24 hours.

  • _gat. Throttles the request rate to Google servers. Duration: 1 minute.

WHAT GOOGLE ANALYTICS COLLECTS

  • Approximate geographic location, at country and city level, derived from IP address

  • Browser type, operating system, and device category

  • Pages viewed and time spent on each

  • The referring source that brought you to the Website

  • Interactions with Website features

Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses. IP anonymization is applied by default.

HOW WE HAVE CONFIGURED IT

  • We have entered a data processing agreement with Google

  • We have disabled data sharing with Google for advertising purposes

  • We have limited the data retention period

  • For visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, we have implemented Google Consent Mode v2, which adjusts Google Analytics behavior according to your consent choice

OPTING OUT

Google's description of how it processes data for the sites that use its services is available at google.com/policies/privacy/partners.

5. FUNCTIONAL COOKIES

Functional cookies remember choices you make, such as language, and record your cookie consent so that we do not ask you again on every page. Apart from the consent record itself, which we must keep in order to honor your choice, these are set only with your consent.

  • wixLanguage. Remembers your language preference. Duration: 12 months.

  • consent-policy. Stores your cookie consent choice. Duration: 12 months.

  • _wixCIDX. Internal analytics for the site owner. Duration: 3 months.

  • _wix_browser_sess. Browser session identification for platform systems. Duration: session.

6. THIRD-PARTY COOKIES

Some services we rely on set their own cookies. We do not control those cookies and cannot vary their duration or purpose. Each provider's own policy governs them.

Wix, Wix Donations, and Wix Payments

Our hosting provider, which also supplies the Wix Donations application and the Wix Payments processor. Beyond the essential and functional cookies listed above, completing a donation on our site may set additional session and security cookies required for checkout and fraud prevention. Because this checkout runs on our own domain, these are first-party cookies, but the data behind them is processed by the platform. See the Wix Privacy Policy.

Google Analytics

Our analytics provider, as described in Section 4. See the Google Privacy Policy.

PayPal

Used to process donations. When you interact with a PayPal element or complete a donation, PayPal may set session cookies for transaction processing, security cookies for fraud prevention, and preference cookies. See the PayPal Privacy Statement.

Donorbox

Used to present and process donation forms. Donorbox may set session cookies for form functionality, cookies recording recurring donation preferences, and security cookies for transaction verification. See the Donorbox Privacy Policy.

Donation processing involves a payment provider by necessity, and we use more than one. Cookies set during a donation come from whichever channel you use, not from all three. If you prefer not to interact with a third-party provider at all, write to info@agardresearchassociates.org and we will arrange an alternative.

7. MANAGING YOUR PREFERENCES

OUR CONSENT BANNER

On your first visit you may accept all cookies, reject all non-essential cookies, or set your preferences by category. Your choice is recorded and honored on subsequent visits. You may change it at any time through the cookie settings control on the Website, or by clearing your browser cookies for our domain, which will cause the banner to appear again.

Withdrawing consent is as straightforward as giving it, and withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew.

BROWSER SETTINGS

Most browsers let you view stored cookies, delete some or all of them, block all cookies or only third-party cookies, and set rules for particular sites.

GLOBAL PRIVACY CONTROL

We honor the Global Privacy Control signal. If your browser or extension transmits it, we treat it as a request to opt out of non-essential cookies and of any sale or sharing of personal data, without requiring you to contact us. More information is available at globalprivacycontrol.org.

DO NOT TRACK

There is no uniform standard for interpreting Do Not Track browser signals, and we therefore do not respond to them. We honor Global Privacy Control instead, which is a recognized universal opt-out mechanism. If a standard for Do Not Track is adopted that applies to us, we will update this policy.

IF YOU DISABLE COOKIES

Declining analytics cookies costs you nothing. Declining or deleting essential cookies may prevent parts of the Website from working, including member login and secure form submission.

8. YOUR RIGHTS

NEW JERSEY

The New Jersey Data Privacy Act, N.J.S.A. 56:8-166.4 et seq., took effect on 15 January 2025 and, unlike most comparable state statutes, contains no entity-level exemption for nonprofit organizations. Whether it applies to us depends on volume thresholds that we monitor. Where it applies, New Jersey residents have the right to confirm processing and access personal data, correct inaccuracies, delete personal data, obtain a portable copy, and opt out of targeted advertising, sale, and certain profiling. Where the thresholds are not met, we extend the same rights voluntarily.

We honor universal opt-out mechanisms, including Global Privacy Control.

EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA AND UNITED KINGDOM

Under the General Data Protection Regulation and the ePrivacy Directive, where they apply to our processing, you have the right to receive clear information about cookies before they are set, to give or withhold consent for non-essential cookies, to withdraw consent as easily as you gave it, to access, correct, or delete personal data collected through cookies, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Non-essential cookies are not set until you consent.

CALIFORNIA

The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, applies to for-profit businesses. As a nonprofit organization we are generally outside its scope. We nonetheless disclose our practices here and extend equivalent choices to California residents. We do not sell personal data and we do not share personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising.

COLORADO AND OREGON

The Colorado Privacy Act and the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act reach nonprofit organizations that meet their applicability thresholds. Residents of those states have rights of access, correction, deletion, and portability, and rights to opt out of targeted advertising, sale, and certain profiling. We honor universal opt-out mechanisms in both states.

EVERYONE ELSE

We do not restrict these choices by geography. Wherever you are, you may decline non-essential cookies and ask us what we hold.

HOW TO EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS

9. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in our practices, in the technologies we use, or in applicable law. When we do, we will revise the Effective Date above.

If we make a material change to how we use cookies, we will give notice on the Website and, where the change affects the basis on which non-essential cookies are set, we will seek your consent again rather than rely on consent given to a previous version.
